St. John's YouthThe young people in our congregation are an integral part of our life together. With their advisor, Amy Spaude, and other adults, they engage in bible study, service projects, fellowship and fun activities. We meet the first Sunday of each month following the worship service. For special activities please see the calendar and the link "Events". Our youth group members are encouraged to participate not only in congregational events but also in offerings through our Synod and the national church.
Spring 2011 Pizza Fundraiser. Who doesn't love pizza?? The LYO group hand made 770 pizzas and garlic bread on a Saturday morning. We all worked hard but had fun doing it. The profits helped some of our group with the expenses for their mission trip to Norway, MI in July and to be able to attend the Synod senior high and junior high youth gatherings this year.
Sun and Fun where the order of the day when the LYO went on a summer fun day event on July 23,2011! The weather was perfect for a day spent at Wolf River Campgrounds floating down the river, eating a quick lunch and tubing down again. There were lots of reminders for sunscreen and opportunities for laughs.
Paintball anyone??? 22 LYO members and their friends spent an afternoon at Commando Paintball in Little Suamico on April 9, 2011. It was a near spring like day and we had a "ball" being outdoors after the long Wisconsin winter. The bruises will fade but not the memories made.
Minneapolis is a city that will forever hold a special place in the hearts of 18 members of St. John's Lutheran Church, Little Suamico. From June 27th to July 2nd, 2010 15 youth and 3 adult chaperones from St. John's in Little Suamico travelled to Minneapolis, Minnesota on the youth group's annual Mission Trip. The participants worked through a Christian mission group called Group Work Camps. The youth worked on a variety of sites and projects. Cottage Park, Plymouth School, and Kaleidoscope Place were centers for disadvantaged kids, while Friendship Ventures was a camp for disabled adults. Westwood Senior Center was just that, a senior center, and Hidden Treasures was a thrift store. Participants at Feed My Starving Children packaged dehydrated meals for third world countries, while those at Emergency Food Center repackaged food for disadvantaged people. Hope for the City was a warehouse distribution center for the disadvantaged people of Minneapolis, and Global Health Ministries was a ministry that donated personal health products to third world countries. Project for Pride in Living provided housing and assistance for low-income families, and Meals on Wheels provided meals to shut-in or low-income individuals. All of these sites, however, shared a common goal: to help the needy of this world, locally and far away. This Mission Trip brought back 18 very changed people who were amazed by God's power to work through them to help others.
On July 19-24, 2009, 13 youth and 3 adults went on a mission trip to the Quad Cities. This is a specific area on the Mississippi River that borders the states of Iowa and Illinois. We combined with 3 other churches from across the USA to be 70 Christians strong. We specifically spent all of our days in Davenport, Iowa and worked in three different urban ministry sites. Part of the group combined with other youth from Alabama to share their days between two ministries. They spent their mornings at Skate Church, a church sponsored 3 story indoor skate boarding facility. They did general maintance work of cleaning, painting and grounds clean up. In the afternoon, they went to Project Renewal, an afternoon program that gives the kids in the community a safe place to go to enjoy computer games, fellowship and fun. The rest of the group worked at Lydia House for the entire week. This is a temporary shelter for women and children in need. It also offers afterschool and summer programs for at risk kids. This allows them a chance to get away from the high crime neighborhood. While at Lydia House, they mostly interacted with the k-3 graders and shared basic school activities and daily praise/worship time with them. We did have a chance to help out in the community a little bit. That included painting and yard work around the building and for a neighbor.
